The potato consumption and the almost 2.5 millions tons produced in Spain place this country between the European countries where the potato crop has a major importance.

On the other hand, 42.000 T of seed potato are produced in 2.631 ha in Spain . Castilla y León produced about 26.950 T in 1.884 ha in 2008. The seed potato production area of this region is located in Burgos and Palencia with 270 authorized producers in 108 villages. The majority of them are grouped in Cooperatives for trading and production.

Potato producers grow specific varieties for each purpose (fresh market or processing). This means that an increasing area is planted with protected varieties.
